Custom-Made Idler Tire Replacement
This option is intended for selected vintage audio and video equipment where an idler tire is required but a confirmed replacement is not currently listed as a standard product.
WebSpareParts may be able to evaluate a custom-made idler tire replacement using the original tire, clear photos, measurements or workshop reference information.
Idler tires are commonly used in cassette decks, VCRs, recorders, turntables and other vintage mechanisms to transfer motion between pulleys, wheels or drive assemblies. When the rubber becomes hard, cracked, glazed, swollen or worn, the mechanism may slip, fail to engage or lose correct transport function.
What we need from you
Please contact us before ordering and send:
- The brand and model of the equipment.
- Clear photos of the idler assembly.
- Photos of the original idler tire, if available.
- The outside diameter.
- The inside diameter.
- The tire width / thickness.
- Any additional measurements that may help.
- Information about the fault symptom.
Important information
- This is a custom-made replacement option, not a universal idler tire.
- Availability depends on the dimensions, rubber profile, mechanism design and available production options.
- In some cases, the original idler tire or complete idler wheel may be required for accurate evaluation.
- Compatibility and final suitability can only be confirmed after checking the information supplied.
- Custom-made parts may require additional preparation time.
Difficulty
Moderate · typically 20–60 min for a first-timer with basic tools.
Tools needed
Screwdrivers, circlip pliers or fine tweezers, isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs
Common mistakes to avoid
- Losing the tiny C-clip or washer that retains the roller — work over a tray and keep the removal order noted.
- Not cleaning the capstan shaft while you're in there — a dirty capstan chews up a new roller quickly.
- Bending the pinch roller arm when levering the old roller off — support the arm, press only on the roller hub.
- Touching the new rubber surface with bare fingers before first use.
After installation, run a cassette for a minute and watch the tape path: the tape should run centred without curling at the roller edges. If it curls, the roller isn't seated square on its shaft.
