Difficulty
Easy to moderate · typically 15–45 min for a first-timer with basic tools.
Tools needed
Phillips & flat screwdrivers, plastic tweezers, isopropyl alcohol (90%+), cotton swabs
Common mistakes to avoid
- Handling the new belt with bare fingers — skin oils cause slipping. Use tweezers or clean hands with alcohol first.
- Not cleaning old belt residue off the pulleys — degraded rubber turns to goo and the new belt will slip. Clean every pulley with isopropyl alcohol before fitting.
- Forgetting the routing — take a photo of the old belt path before removing anything.
- Twisting a flat or square belt during fitting — it must sit flat in the pulley groove.
- Overstretching the belt while installing — walk it gently over the pulleys instead of pulling hard.
If the old belt has melted into tar, remove all residue completely first — a lighter fluid–damped swab works on stubborn goo, followed by isopropyl alcohol. Let everything dry before fitting the new belt.
