Common mistakes to avoid
- Skipping anti-static precautions, laser pickups are ESD-sensitive. Ground yourself before touching the unit.
- Forgetting to remove the solder blob / shorting protection on the new pickup's flex cable (where present), it won't read discs with it in place, but never remove it until the pickup is installed.
- Touching the lens, clean only with a dry lens-safe swab if needed.
- Turning the laser power potentiometer "to see if it helps", this kills pickups. Leave factory adjustments alone.
Before swapping the pickup, clean the old lens and the disc, a surprising number of "dead lasers" are just dirty optics or a worn belt keeping the tray/sled from moving.
